Food on the Go
With limited options, eating could feel like a chore for some citizens. When this occurred, and if they had coins to spare, denizens enjoyed eating out. While there were many restaurants in Pompeii, they were oftentimes places you wouldn't want your children in. They were filled with drunks and gamblers, and questionable practices. While there were very few brothels specifically for that purpose in Pompeii, their business was often conducted in the back of these bars.
While there were plenty of these places in Pompeii, previous estimates of the amount were often way too high. In reality, a lot of the places with dolia, or large jars, set into their counter tops were grocers, or other businesses of the sort. |
